According to the preface "Pirates and Emperors' Noam Chomsky's book, St. Augustine tells the story of a pirate captured by Alexander the Great, who asked:" How dare you disturb sea? ". "How dare you disturb the whole world ?" - Replied the pirate - "And or I have a small boat, so I called a thief. You have a whole fleet, so they call you Emperor. " Without wishing to emulate Mr. Chomsky, we have had in recent days, a new example of how little has been done since the days of Alexander of Macedonia.
may remember the man who threw a shoe at George Bush during a press conference that the now former president U.S. dodged with enviable agility. As we read in the media, this man has been sentenced to three years, considering that the act was a mere offense, not aggression.
We're not here to justify the actions of this journalist, even though Mr. Bush is deeply disliked it, or let's say that the sentence is unjust (perhaps somewhat disproportionate, but no less an attempt to attack Head of State).
What is really sad is that, over the centuries that have passed, and the philosophical and legal developments behind us, there remains a privilagiada class, now made by politicians, who seem governed by a different standard to others. So that Mr. Bush, to cite one example, may order to invade a country, killing thousands of noncombatants, torturing hundreds, can ruin the U.S. economy in the process, dragging the rest of the civilized world, but to enrich his friends and members of his administration so at least debatable, but apparently may be asked any responsibility for it.
None of us mere mortals, we can expect with such impunity. A simple error in the exercise of our profession, that results in damage to a third party can make a claim. But instead it seems that our politicians (And some bankers) are beyond good and evil, can cause major damage, and what we can not ask any responsibility?
Maybe it's time for a change of opinion. It is true that a special responsibility requirement could lead to deadlock (because the politician would be preferable to do nothing than risk a demand for accountability), but the alternative can not be impunity. A change of mind, first, and the legislature, if necessary, should be sufficient to prevent all the abuses to which we have used both.
If a guardian or administrator must be accountable for their management why not the Presidents or Heads State?. If a senior officer of a company has, to its output, incompatibilities and prohibitions important to avoid taking advantage of their contacts or friends why not our leaders?
Keep this double standard undermines the rule of law funsamentos and will only lead us to a serious deterioration of our society, the creation of a new nobility (which, like all others, controls access to your group, our country through partisan politics) only formally supported by the popular will, with levels of abstention increasingly high and growing frustration.
And remember that changes, if necessary, eventually occur, by hook or by crook. We hope that this is the best.
